The other nickname, "The City Under Seven Flags," references the famous Six Flags Over Texas slogan, but notes that Laredo also flies the Flag of the Republic of the Rio Grande due to the fact that it served as the republic's capital during its brief existence. The city is known for hosting the Washington's Birthday Celebration, an annual multi-week festival held to commemorate the first President of the United States, which brings approximately 400,000 tourists to the area each February.
